moos from Elizabeth!!! Her cow Hazel is the daughter of Local Farm bred and raised Pepita. Last October, Hazel came back to her roots at Local Farm for a four week date with Local Farm’s miniature jersey bull, Litmus… here’s the result!

Hazel had her calf on her own last week. I went out to check on her and the calf was here, seemingly a few moments old. We were able to see him take his first steps. The picture was taken shortly after he took his first steps. Now he is frolicking about, loving his time in a big green field with his attentive mother.

Milking is quite an adventure. We are all getting the hang of it. This morning it took me an hour and a half instead of two and a half. The milk is amazingly fresh - never had anything like it really.
I am imagining that I will be able to do the entire milking project in 45 minutes or less once all systems are in place and we have a bit more experience - that is Hazel the cow and me. She is generally really good about it for never having to stand still for so long and have her udder tugged at! The calf sleeps by her head while I milk her. It is a lovely feeling to milk a cow - the peace of the barn, the rhythm of the milking, the closeness to such a warm, large, sweet smelling, gentle creature… It is quite relaxing when Hazel is still and not peeing or pooping…
